Glossary
AUCTION: this is a method of selling fish for fishmongers, wholesalers and processors. In the past the vendor used to call out the prices. Nowadays this procedure is heavily computerised.

BOTTOM TRAWLER:
this is a net used to fish species near the sea bed.

BRAIL NET:
this is a kind of large landing net which is used to bring aboard pelagic fish caught with a purse seine.

CAPTAIN: (or skipper): this is the person who commands the boat and is in charge of its smooth functioning.

CATCH: this is a boat's fish producte.

COASTGUARD: this is a person responsible for maritime policing (combatting illegal traffic at sea, policing sailing) and civil safety at sea such as search and rescue.

CREW: this is all the seamen who embark on the same boat; the number and qualifications vary according to the size and trades of the boats. Crews are made up of seamen who perform various functions: captain, second-in-command, boatswain, cook, mechanic, sailor. On Scapêche boats, the size of crew varies between 5 to 30.

FISHIERY ZONES: these are specified by the International Council for Exploration of the Sea (ICES). They apply to species and to shipowners.

FISHING QUOTAS: these are specified by the European Commission which allocates quantities by zone and by species to each State. Not all species are subject to quota.

FISHING VESSEL OWNER: this is the company or person who fits out and runs a fishing boat or merchant ship. Scapêche is the Fishing Vessel Owner for the Les Mousquetaires Group.

this is the action of bringing fishing gear onto the boat: we haul a trawl, a longline or a line of pots.

LINE: this is the name of the cable or the end which is attached to a set of pots or hooks.

LOG BOOK: or "livre de bord" in French. This is a document or several documents in which the captain of a boat records various items relating to fishing (zone, species and quantities, date and time, etc.).

LONGLINING: this is a fishing technique which uses hooks, connected by a line.

MECHANIC:
this is the seaman who specialises in the mechanics and technical maintenance of the boat. The qualifications required vary according to the boat.

PELAGIC TRAWL:
this is a net used to fish pelagic species, in other words species which live between two waters.

POTS: these are traps which, with bait, make it possible to catch shellfish such as crabs. The pots are attached to lines and laid on the bottom of the sea.

PURSE SEINE: this is a weighted net which is used for purse seining (see this term).

PURSE SEINING:
this is a fishing technique by which fish can be encircled. It is particularly used for fishing pelagic fish, which move in a shoal, like sardine and mackerel.

RESPONSIBLE FISHERY: In 1995 the FAO published the "Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries". Scapêche took up the 4 major principles (resources, environment, society and product quality) in order to obtain "Responsible Fishery" recognition, issued by Bureau Veritas, on 7 species.

SAILOR: this is the person who, under the captain's orders, manoeuvres the fishing gear and handles the catch.

SEAMEN: this is all the personnel embarked on boats (fishing, merchant or pleasure).

SHOOTING OUT THE LINE: this is the action of putting fishing gear into the water: a trawl, longline of line of pots is shot out.

SUPPLYING: this means taking food supplies and equipment on-board a boat, as well as any supplies necessary for the smooth running of the boat.

TRAWL WARP: this is the name of the cable which links a boat to its trawl.

VMS (Vessel Monitoring System): this is a satellite positioning system for boats, which enables the relevant authorities to know the actual position of boats in real time.
